Shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), involves the delivery of acoustic waves to targeted areas of the body. This technology has found its way into musculoskeletal medicine for treating conditions such as tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and various forms of chronic pain.
How Does it Work?
The mechanism behind shockwave therapy is intriguingly simple yet effective. By delivering high-energy acoustic waves to the affected area, the therapy initiates a cascade of biological responses. These shockwaves stimulate blood flow, enhance tissue regeneration, and promote the release of healing factors within the body. In essence, it jumpstarts the body’s innate healing processes, offering a non-invasive solution to chronic ailments. The shockwave instrument creates a moderate tapping sensation which isn’t painful and doesn’t require any prior anesthetic.
What Can it Treat?
Here at Sure Step Podiatry, we can use Shockwave Treatment on many lower limb conditions. Most commonly, it is particularly beneficial for the treatment of plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and heel spurs. It most cases we would recommend 3-5 treatments a week apart for the best outcome.
