A common problem seen at Sure Step Podiatry is pain on the ball of the foot. It is commonly referred to by doctors as metatarsalgia. Forefoot pain can begin after an injury or sprain or come on gradually without any obvious causes. There can be a range of problems as to why the pain is happening, particularly in the forefoot as there are many bones and joints present. Seeing a professional to get a diagnosis as to what is happening in the forefoot can be paramount. There are many conditions that can cause forefoot pain including nerve entrapment (Morton’s neuroma), stress fractures and arthritis.
If you wear high heels frequently you can reduce forefoot pain by reducing the height of the heel you wear. Another way to reduce forefoot pain in your shoes is to make sure you have at least 1cm of sole under the front of the foot.
Symptoms that can occur in the forefoot that require further examination include burning and stabbing pain and throbbing at night. Other symptoms may include feeling of grinding at the joints or persistent pain when exercising.
When you see a podiatrist for forefoot pain you will receive a thorough examination which is required to determine a diagnosis. During a consultation a biomechanical assessment is likely to take place with the podiatrist performing tests to see what is causing the pain and the possible walking patterns which are causing it. Many different treatment options are available for forefoot pain depending on the condition causing it. These include footwear changes, padding, orthoses, stretching/strengthening, massage and many more. If you’re concerned about foot pain please contact our clinic for a consultation.
